Our Mushroom compost has been steam sterilised so it does not contain pests, disease or weed seed that would otherwise cause problems for the gardener. Mushroom compost is an excellent soil conditioner, especially on a heavy clay soil. It improves the soil structure by creating larger pore spaces and increasing the organic matter content, which in turn improves oxygen diffusion and water holding capacity encouraging root growth.
Mushroom compost works well both as a mulch and dug over into the soil.
For general soil improvement a 50mm layer should be spread over the area to be treated then forked in. It is best applied around early spring, on an annual basis, before planting so that the growing plants can benefit from it.
Please Note: Mushroom compost slightly increases the pH of soil and is therefore unsuitable for ericaceous plants (e.g. Camellias and azaleas). For a compost which is better suited for ericaceous plants use our Tree and Shrub compost - the link is at the top of this page.
